Around Erfurt

Erfurt- the capital of Thuringia in the green heart of Germany. The town was first mentioned in the documents in 742 and has been preserved excellently throughout the centuries. The town is dominated by its medieval city centre and the famous landmark, St.Mary’s Cathedral and St. Severus church. Merchants’ Bridge is another unique sight, a bridge over the wild river Gera with 12o metres length which is completely built up with houses. The town has always attracted well-known personalities. Martin Luther, the Bach family, Napoleon, Friedrich Schiller, Johann Wolfgang Goethe and many other artists and scientists contributed to the spirit of this town. Erfurt is a town that can provide everything, a university and an ICE connection, an airport and a Fair Centre. Welcome to the Thuringian Rome!

Boniface and developed at the intersection of ancient trade roads into a powerful town of trade and university. Numerous great personalities came to Erfurt to immerse in its cultural life. Among them were Martin Luther (protestant Augustinian monastery), Adam Ries, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Friedrich Schiller and the Bach family (Merchants’ church was the wedding church of John Sebastian Bach’s parents) as well as Wilhelm and Alexander Humboldt, the tsar Alexander and Napoleon (Emperor’s Hall, State Chancellery). A large number of carefully restored houses in timber-frame and renaissance style tell the story of one of the richest medieval towns in central Europe and make Erfurt’s historical old town one of the best remained urban centres in Germany.As Erfurt had 36 parish churches and 15 monasteries it was given the sobriquet "Thuringian Rome" and "Erfordia turrita" (multi-towered  Erfurt). Due to its uniqueness the capital belongs to one of the most beautiful towns in Germany.
